WORKSHOPS
“A mouthful of salty is better than a stomachful of sweet,” as an Estonian proverb puts it. In this practical workshop, you can learn how to make two folk dishes of the Hiiumaa people – makks and käkks. Makks are what the local people call sausages filled with barley. They can be made with or without blood. Dumpling soup (käkisupp) is what the Hiiumaa people consider their most ancient folk dish. Its ingredients are simple, but the soup itself is nutritious and delicious.

A candle provides light and warmth, helps you find your way home, and creates an atmosphere and a festive feeling. For centuries, candles have been made at home, either by using moulds or by dipping. Let’s give it a try.

Wedding tassels have a magical meaning among the wedding rituals. They symbolise our foremothers’ ability to make use of every single piece of yarn and strip of fabric. In this workshop, we make wedding tassels of our own liking to decorate the dowry chest or to confirm the engagement.

100 years ago, it was customary in Kärdla to make carpets that were a bit fancier for placing in front of the sofa. They were decorated with embroidered flowers. In this workshop, we draw inspiration from those old carpets and make fun fringe flowers to decorate a practical small bag.

The smell of warm bread adds value to every home. In the kitchen of Mihkli farm, bread is made the way it was done in the olden days. The dough is made with the starter in a bread trough, after which the loaves are shaped and lifted with the peel into the bread oven, where they are baked. All this is easier than we can even imagine. Enjoy your meal! or, as the Hiiumaa people say, Jätku leiba! (“May your bread last!”)
