The main building of the Hiiumaa Museum is situated in the centre of Kärdla, in the house where the directors of the Hiiu-Kärdla Broadcloth Factory used to live until the middle of the 20th century. The local people used to call it the Long House (Pikk Maja). The Long House has been the main building of the Hiiumaa Museum since 1998.
The museum, along with a fun playroom and a souvenir shop, is open all year round. There are various bigger and smaller exhibitions on display; and the exhibitions are exchanged for new ones several times during the year. The theme of the year in Hiiumaa in 2024 is art; and a related exhibitions are open in the Long House.
The exhibition rooms are located on two floors. On the first floor, there is a hall, along with three exhibition rooms, the playroom, and the souvenir shop. On the second floor, there is a gallery (access only via the stairs).
The building, the length of which is more than 60 metres, was built in the 1830s–1840s and is the longest wooden building in Kärdla that has survived until today. During the Soviet era, it housed various governing bodies, including the education department, as well as the library. In addition, festive wedding ceremonies took place in the Long House – in fact, this is still done nowadays. Different concerts and salon evenings are organised in the hall of the Long House. Meetings, seminars, and workshops are held in this hall; a variety of festive occasions are celebrated here. If you wish to host your event here as well, you are welcome to contact us!
The souvenir and book shop of the Long House offers a wide range of souvenirs and books related to Hiiumaa, as well as handicraft made in Hiiumaa. The shop is open during the opening hours of the museum. Visitors are also welcome to visit our online store!
The hall of the Long House is the perfect place for arranging concerts and private events. The room seats up to 70 people in theatre style.
It is also possible to rent a smaller room – a classroom. The classroom seats up to 12 people around the table. Presentation equipment is available on the spot.
